Chicken farms in Malawi
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa with a very short history of democracy. The country has fought against corruption, political violence, hunger and AIDS, all of which have impoverished its population.
However, the population is learning to make demands of their democratically elected government and of the people who have been given the responsibility of managing the country’s few resources. In central Malawi, the Mtoso, Kumala, Ishmail and Kudoko villages are all participating in an innovative project focusing on the production of eggs. The objective is to help the women of the villages increase their income.
The women of the villages have been given egg laying hens. The eggs are to be sold at the local markets and the local farms are supported by the SANOVO Techhology Group in cooperation with DanChurchAid.
The implementation of the project is facilitated by DanChurchAid and Folkekirkens Nødhjælp’s local partner, the Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (ELDS). The project was started in December 2007 and is set to run for 5 years. The project is followed closely by the SANOVO Techhology Group who is also providing information, know-how and training to the participants in the project.
